AI for Everyday Life: A Practical Guide to Using AI with Confidence · Module 1 · Lesson 1
What Generative AI Can Do—and Cannot Do
Use AI as a practical starting point while keeping your experience and judgment in charge.
Your objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to name a low-stakes task AI can help you start and decide what still needs your review.
Generative AI is a conversation-based tool that can produce a new draft, list, explanation, or set of ideas from your request. A prompt is simply the way you tell it what you want; it is a flexible thinking aid, not programming.
See It — Start a task you already have
Ravi is moving out of an apartment in two weeks. The task feels larger than the time he has available, so he asks AI for a first plan rather than a perfect answer.
Scenario: a move with limited time
Learner: I move out of my apartment in two weeks. Make a packing plan for 45 minutes each evening. I have boxes already and want a room-by-room checklist.
AI: Here is a two-week checklist: begin with rarely used items, label each box with its room and contents, and leave daily essentials for the last days. I can adjust the plan if you tell me what has to stay available.
Learner: Keep one suitcase ready for my first three days after the move, and do not pack the kitchen until the final weekend. Revise the plan.
AI: Revised plan: pack storage, books, and out-of-season clothing first; reserve the suitcase for essentials; schedule kitchen items for the final weekend; and add a last-day check for keys, chargers, and cleaning supplies.
Takeaway: The first answer gave Ravi a starting structure. His follow-up made it fit his real life.
Understand It — Helpful patterns, not personal judgment
AI is often good at getting a task moving: generating options, organizing a list, rewriting a draft, explaining unfamiliar wording, or showing a simple outline. It works from patterns in information, not from personal experience or a dependable view of your circumstances.
It can make a confident-sounding mistake, miss an important detail, or give an answer that does not suit your priorities. Read the result, correct it, and use a trusted source or qualified person when a decision affects health, money, legal obligations, safety, or another high-stakes matter.
Try It and Improve It — Give the answer something to work with
First request: Help me pack.
Improved request: Make a two-week packing checklist for moving from a one-bedroom apartment. I can work 45 minutes each evening. Group it by room and leave the kitchen for the final weekend.
Takeaway: The improved request names the task, time available, relevant constraints, and a useful format. You can add or remove details whenever they matter to you.
Improve It: make the request safer and more useful
A first answer becomes more useful when you add the situation, what you already know, and the kind of help you want. You do not need a technical formula; you can simply ask for a shorter explanation, an example, or a list of questions to verify.
Improve the request by removing private details and by asking AI to state what it cannot know. Keep the final decision with you or an appropriate person.
Use It in Real Life — Choose a small, low-stakes first task
Pick a task where a draft or list would save you time: organize a household project, outline a learning plan, compare ways to begin a hobby, or draft a routine message. Start with information you are comfortable sharing.
Before acting on the result, ask: Does this fit my situation? What should I change? Does any part need an independent check? For example, you can use AI to help prepare questions about a lease, but a housing professional or official source should explain what the lease requires.
Check Your Judgment
Use the decision below to practice the difference between accepting an answer and using it thoughtfully.
Try it
Create one useful first request
- Choose one low-stakes task you would genuinely like help starting this week.
- State the outcome you want, then add one or two details that would change the answer for you.
- Ask for a format you could use, such as a checklist, short draft, comparison, or set of options.
- Read your request once and remove any private information that is not needed.
Prompt pattern: Help me [start a task]. Please consider [one or two useful details]. Give me the result as [useful format].
Helpful feedback
A strong first request gives AI a direction without trying to predict every word of the answer. If the first result misses the mark, you can add the detail that matters next.
Use it in real life: Use your request in an AI conversation when you are ready. Review the result before relying on it, and verify anything consequential outside the tool.
Check your judgment
An AI packing plan says to put unused electronics in the regular trash. What is the best next step?
